Mobile Traffic Information System

Contact persons: Igor Timko, Johann Gamper, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

The Mobile Traffic Information System (MTI system) is used for informing tourists and citizens of Bolzano about traffic situation. The system architecture is presented in the figure below. The backbone of the system is the Database Server (left) that receives streaming data about car counts produced by sensors installed in different points of the Bolzano road network. The Mobile Device (right) is used for continuosly presenting the car counts to the user (e.g., on a map of Bozen-Bolzano). The Mobile Device must connect to the Database Server through a servlet that runs on the Web Server (middle).

The goal of this thesis is to develop techniques for mobile user access to the streaming car counts (i.e., accessing the Database Server with the Mobile Device), which can be separated into (1) database techniques for data stream processing (the Web Server access to the Database Server) and (2) user interface techniques for data stream visualization (the Mobile Device Access to the Web Server).

This thesis is part of the "Bolzano: Everywhere in 10 Minutes" (BZ10M) project (see http://www.inf.unibz.it/dis/projects/eBZ/projects/bz10m.html), which means that the student will actively collaborate with the Municipality of Bozen-Bolzano.
